Why Your Website Isn't Getting You Any Customers (and How to Fix It)

Your website gets no leads? Here are the six real reasons local business sites don't bring in customers, and a plain checklist to fix each one.

You paid for a website. Maybe you paid for SEO too. And the phone still isn't ringing. It's one of the most common things we hear from local business owners: "I have a website, but it doesn't bring me any work."

A website that gets no customers almost always has a specific, fixable reason behind it, not bad luck. Here are the six we see most, and how to fix each one.

1. It Doesn't Show Up When People Search Nearby

Most local jobs start with a "near me" or "in [your town]" search. If your site isn't built to be found there, customers never see it, no matter how nice it looks.

The two things that matter most: a claimed and filled-out Google Business Profile, and a website structured for local search, with your city and services in your page titles, headings, and content.

Fix it:

  • Claim and complete your Google Business Profile, with correct hours, phone, and service area
  • Put your main service and town in your homepage title and headings
  • Create a separate page for each service you offer, not one page that lists everything

2. It's Too Slow, Especially on Phones

Most people find you on a phone, often standing in a hardware aisle or sitting in a truck. If your site takes more than a few seconds to load, they hit "back" and click the next result. You never even knew they came.

Slow sites usually mean huge unoptimized images, a bloated template, or cheap hosting. All three are fixable.

Fix it:

  • Test your site on your own phone, on cell data, not office Wi-Fi
  • Compress every image before it goes on the site
  • Drop heavy plugins, sliders, and pop-ups you don't need

3. It Looks Dated, So People Don't Trust It

People decide whether to trust a business in seconds. A site that looks like it was built a decade ago quietly tells visitors you might be out of business, or careless about your work. That doubt is enough for them to leave.

You don't need flashy. You need clean, current, and clearly yours: real photos, readable text, and a design that works on a phone screen.

Fix it:

  • Use real photos of your work and team, not stock images
  • Make sure text is large enough to read on a phone without pinching
  • Show your logo, name, and service area clearly at the top

4. There's No Obvious Way to Contact You

This one costs the most jobs. A visitor is ready to call, and your phone number is tiny, buried in the footer, or missing from half your pages. So they give up.

Every page should make getting in touch effortless. On mobile, that means a tap-to-call button that dials instantly.

Fix it:

  • Put a click-to-call phone number in the header of every page
  • Add a short contact or quote form that asks for only what you need
  • Repeat your phone number at the bottom of every page too

5. The Copy Talks About You, Not the Customer

Open your homepage. If it opens with "We are a family-owned business established in..." you've already lost attention. Customers don't care about you first. They care about their problem.

Lead with what they need fixed and what happens next. Talk about their leak, their broken unit, their deadline, then show you're the one to handle it.

Fix it:

  • Open with the customer's problem, not your company history
  • Say plainly what you do, where, and how to start
  • Cut jargon and write the way you'd talk to a customer at their door

6. There's No Proof You're Any Good

A stranger has no reason to believe you're reliable. Reviews, ratings, photos of finished work, and any licenses or certifications close that gap. Without them, even a good-looking site feels like a gamble.

Fix it:

  • Show recent reviews or a Google rating on the homepage
  • Add before-and-after photos of real jobs
  • List licenses, insurance, and how long you've been working

Where to Start

If your site gets no leads, don't rebuild everything at once. Start with the two that lose the most work fastest: make sure you show up in local search, and make sure calling you takes one tap. Then work down the list.
